Book Fair
In addition to the book fair held during the Correntes d’Escritas Literary Festival, a second period of dynamization of the book market and incentive to reading takes place annually in August. The Póvoa de Varzim Book Fair, located at Largo do Passeio Alegre, has been held since 1995. It takes advantage of the festive climate of summer, children’s free time on school holidays and the increase in tourism. The event’s agenda includes conversations with writers and various activities dedicated to families with workshops, theatre productions and concerts.
Internacional Music Festival
The International Music Festival of Póvoa de Varzim was born in July 1979, proposed by pianist Sequeira Costa and organized by SOPETE S.A.. In 2003, the Pró-Música Association took over the organisation of the festival. The Municipal Council has embraced, since the beginning, the Festival as part of its cultural policy, providing the necessary support for the development of this initiative.
The Festival's motto is classical music, with the main focus on the Renaissance and Baroque periods. However, it seeks to keep itself constantly updated, keeping up with current musical trends and contemporary art. By this, it seeks to attract new audiences, having a festival calendar with complementary events, many of which take place throughout the year, thanks to the initiatives promoted by the Póvoa de Varzim Music School, the Verazin Quartet and the Póvoa de Varzim International Composition Competition.
The constant need for evolution, renewal of audiences and search for cultural decentralisation is reflected in the idea of spreading the first editions of the festival to other cities besides Póvoa de Varzim, such as Braga, Viana do Castelo, Porto, Vila do Conde, Ponte de Lima, Amares, Barcelos, Caminha, Valença, Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Vila Real. This laudable initiative to seek decentralisation makes this Festival a pioneer.
