Motivation

Póvoa de Varzim – in harmony with its literary vocation and its continuous public policy of promoting reading – shares the principles of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network - UCCN, expressing interest in intensifying the positioning of creativity as a strategic factor for its sustainable development.

Póvoa de Varzim is applying to join the UCCN, in the Literature field, motivated by the possibilities of exchanging learning and establishing cooperation with the other cities of the Network. This application is additionally driven by the purpose of affirming Póvoa de Varzim as the locus of literature in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, contributing to the joint strategy of supra-municipal development. Póvoa de Varzim also highlights the massive potential for associating literature with other creative fields, namely music and cinema. Lastly, Póvoa de Varzim proposes itself as a pivotal actor between the UCCN and the Portuguese-speaking countries, especially in Africa, strengthening the relationships already cultivated by the municipality.

10 reasons to be the Creative City of Literature

I.     Due to its historical intercultural passion, fostered by its strategic location - through contact with the Atlantic, and the Route of Santiago de Compostela - depositing civilisational layers and gathering together know-how;
II.    Due to its centuries-old tradition of attracting literature lovers, in a summer atmosphere that promotes encounters;
III.   For being the cradle or home of major Portuguese-language authors, such as Eça de Queirós and Almeida Garrett;
IV.   For reiterating the continuity of its public policies, having literature as a central tool of social-cultural growth;
V.    Due to the positioning of the city as the locus of literature in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, in a strategic vision of joint development;
VI.   Due to the role it can play in promoting the integration of Portuguese-speaking countries, particularly African ones, into the UCCN;
VII.  Due to the opportunity of closer relations with countries of Iberian expression;
VIII. Due to the possibility of exchanging good practices with other cities of the Network;
IX.   Due to the potential association of literature with other creative fields, especially music and cinema.
X.    Due to the opportunity to expand and diversify the economic conditions of the literary sector.
